First Lady
Michelle Obama
for Ladies’ Homes Journal‘

On her family’s holiday tradition:
“Our extended family was so large, people couldn’t really afford to buy gifts for everyone. So a couple of my aunts would go out and purchase small gifts. They would put them in a basket and in order to get a gift you had to perform. You could tell a joke, read a poem, do a backflip—anything counted. It’s a tradition that we’ve carried on today. I’ve hula-hooped, done a dog trick with Bo and read poems. The kids [Sasha and Malia] will singor put on plays. The president [Barack Obama] and some of the other dads will get together and do a song.”

On her playlist for the holidays:
Mrs. Obama says she has a “phenomenal playlist” for the holidays, “that includes, of course, A Charlie Brown Christmas, as well as James Taylor, Mariah Carey, Boys II Men and Nat King Cole.”

First Lady Michelle Obama appeared on BET’s106 & Park on Wednesday.
Her advice to her younger self: “You know, I don’t know about you guys, but I think that girl was always afraid. You know, I was thinking, maybe I’m not smart enough. Maybe I’m not bright enough. Maybe there are kids that are working harder than me. I was always worrying about disappointing someone or failing. And the thing that I would tell that girl is, don’t worry about failure because failure is the key to success and you are smart enough to sit at any table and compete and have your voice heard. And fortunately, I’ve come to know that.”
On what she misses most about her life prior to becoming the First Lady: “’Anonymity,’ Being able to walk out your front door on your own without agents, people following you around. I just long to walk out that front door, go to CVS and buy some toothpaste! And nobody would notice me!”
