But I Love Me More: “Divas Fall, But Dont Stay Down” x Nova B. Rutherford

Divas

Whitney Houston, Jennifer Lopez and Janet Jackson performed at the AMA’s this week and personally, I was excited to see them on the stage again. In J-lo’s case, despite a minor slip up (but have we EVER seen her stumble before?!) Lopez gave a solid performance that was intricate and true to her roots as an incredible dancer. She fell. SO WHAT! My girl missed 2 counts and went right back in it like the pro she is. After the show, I predict she went to her penthouse, sprayed on some GLOW, popped in ‘Maid in Manhattan’ and took care of her two kids. BX like what? Get it J-Lo.  This week, “fans” were buzzing that Janet didn’t have the same “umph” that she used to. You mean the ‘umph she had in 1987??? She danced to an 8 minute medley spanning 20 years of hits! I’m half her age and struggle with somersaults! Give my girls a break please! I don’t need to defend megastars that I’ve never even met, but it seems that we as fans, take for granted the painful process and pressure that is demanded when one signs up to be an artist. All so they can give to US.

These women started out just like you and I, and neither live a life free of problems. Janet is a ‘Jackson’ – we can’t even begin to imagine what that is like. Jennifer has been married 3 times and survived 2 very public breakups. That hurts, no matter who you are. Weather it be trouble at work, or falling in front of millions, that the difference between winning and losing in this life is how you deal with your problems. These phenomenal women reminded me of that. It’s that inner fire that says “I’ll do it. I got this. I’m going to win.” Ultimately, those are the people who do.

Well said Nova!
I totally agree that the media and fans are totally making more of it than need be.
Life isn’t perfect, we just try our best.

Your article was very well-said, and I don’t have to add much to it!
As a fan and a music consumer, I was also happy to see these artists show what it means to have longevity. The younger artists you mentioned only HOPE to stay in the game as long as these women have ALREADY.

As a musician, it truly bothers me that consumers expect so MUCH of artists. I guess as consumers, folks tend to say “you’re an artist, I’m paying for you – do it right”. But who runs the gamut on what is totally right or wrong? Nobody that is not an artist knows what it takes to put together one intimate show, much LESS a massive production to be aired in front of millions. Furthermore, artists are not the robotic products people expect them to be. They are not I-PODS. They are not in suspended animation. They are HUMANS. They get older, they make mistakes, they CHANGE. They are not going to be the same as they were. If anybody thinks BEYONCE is gonna be jumping and dancing all over the stage at 45 the way she is now, they are a fool. That’s why unfortunately it doesn’t pay to set an overly-ambitious precedent, because the more you do, the more is expected of you.

nova…so much is expected from these women…i can’t even imagine how nerve-wrecking it must be to put yourself OUT there like that in front of millions of people on live television…and on top of that, all three are not only judged for what they are doing but how they look doing it…well said chica. so proud. xo
